Michael and Sophie have arranged to meet for a language exchange. This is their first time meeting.

Sarah:Excuse me, are you here for the language exchange?
Sarah:

Michael:Why yes, hello there. My name is Michael, but my friends call me Mike.

Sarah:Hi there, I'm Sophie. It's very nice to meet you. I am really looking forward to practicing my English. Where is it that you come from?

Michael:Well, I was born in Seattle, in the United States, but I spent most of my life growing up in Canada. What about you?

Sarah:My hometown is here in Taipei. I've lived here all my life. I really love this city, but I've found it a bit dull lately. I consider myself a very adventurous person, and I wish I could see more of the world.

Michael:I understand, I'm the same way. Traveling is my favorite thing to do. That's what made me want to become an English teacher.

Sarah:Wow! You sound like such an interesting and charming person. I am fascinated to hear about all your adventures! I'm sure I will have an exciting time with you.

"Dialogue 1"
1. I wish I could see more of the world.(我希望能到處去多見識一下)

可以用 "to see more of..." Let me know more of you."(讓我多認識你一些吧!)

2. You sound like such an interesting and charming person.(你聽起來是個如此耐人尋味的人。)

類似用法如 "look like"、"smell like"、"feel like"... 等。例如:

You look like hell!

Self-recommendation(自我推薦)

Sarah has come to a job interview. David is the president of the company.

David:Hello, you must be Sarah. My name is David Jackson and I'm the president of this company.

Sarah:Good afternoon Mr. Jackson, thank you for taking the time to see me. This interview is very important to me; I really want to work for your company.

David:Well, it says here on your resume that you graduated first in your class at Harvard. I guess that means you're a hardworking person?

Sarah:Definitely. People often comment on how dedicated I am to my work. Why, just last week my best friend told me that I was the most hardworking person she knew. My mother thinks I work too hard, but I tell her that it's necessary if you want to succeed in life.

David:Well it definitely sounds like you have the right attitude to work here. Do you have any experience in the field of advertising?

Sarah:Yes, I just completed an internship at one of the largest advertising agencies in Europe. I have a letter of reference here from my employer there.

David:Hmmm…. According to this he thinks of you as smart, dependable, and driven to succeed.
David:

Sarah:That's right. I really gave it my all when I was working there. Of course, it helped that I had such a supportive boss. I thought that he managed affairs in the office so well.

David:Well, I try to be supportive to my employees as well. They think of me as a helpful father figure.

Sarah:I can see that. Walking through the office today it was clear that everyone had so much respect for you. You seem so poised and intelligent, not to mention handsome.

David:You're clearly an excellent judge of character. Well, that settles it! I've decided to hire you. Congratulations, I'm sure you'll make an excellent addition to our mail room.

Sarah:What?? Mail room?? But I graduated from Harvard! I thought I was applying for an executive position!

David:Executive? Ha ha! Of course not. You have to work your way up to those positions. For now you'll have to start in the mail room, and if you do your job well we can talk about some form of promotion.

"Dialogue 2"
3. You're clearly an excellent judge of character.

說明:"a judge of character" 按字面意義為「個性的裁判」,因此引申為「會判斷一個人個性的人」,所以有些人或自誇說:「我很會觀察人」,可以說 "I'm an excellent judge of character."

4. You have to work your way up to those positions.(你必須靠自己努力升到那些職位。)

說明:"work one's way up" 是「在工作中步步高升」之意,而介系詞 to 後接「職務名稱」。
