Mothers feel under such pressure to ensure their children are constantly entertained, educated and cared for that a quarter have less than 10 minutes a day to themselves according to a survey.

The pressure is so intense the research identified a new breed of mothers, called "motor mums", who find themselves constantly on the go and unable to relax.

Ninety seven per cent of mothers questioned said they felt under immense pressure to ensure their children were kept busy with social, physical and educational activities, and felt guilty if their children do not seem as active as others.

Ninety five per cent of mothers said they put the needs of their children, home, partners and pets before their own.The pressure meant 86 per cent felt they were in a state of constant motion, and 62 per cent said they felt restless and unable to relax.

The research, conducted by the makers of Bold 2in1 washing powder and liquid, found nearly half of mothers said they had fallen victim to stress-induced temper tantrums.
