In the classroom(在教室裡)
Michael and Vicky take the same language course. They are talking about public security in Taiwan during their break time.

Michael:Vicky, how are you planning to get home after the lesson is over? It's dangerous for you to walk home by yourself.
Michael:Vicky,

Vicky:Thanks for your consideration. I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself. Anyhow, what other choice do I have? I don't have a scooter and I can't afford to take a taxi.

Michael:Well, maybe I could give you a ride home then? It's no trouble for me; it's on my way. A beautiful woman like you shouldn't be walking the streets alone.

Vicky:That's sweet of you to offer; but I'm sorry; I really have to refuse.
Vicky:

Michael:All right, you can't say I didn't try to warn you. Could you tell me one thing though? What are you worried about?

Vicky:Well, to be honest Michael, it's just that I'd feel safer on the streets than in your car. You know, I've seen the way you drive.
"Dialogue 1"
1. I can't afford to take a taxi.(我負擔不起搭計程車。)

(1) afford + N. I can't afford the loan.

(2) afford + to-V. They cannot afford to go to school.

2. I could give you a ride home(我可以載你回家。)

He give me a ride to work.(他載我去上班。)

Situation: On the Street(在街頭)
Vicky is a journalist. She is asking Michael, a passer-by, about his opinion toward the public security in Taiwan.

Vicky:Excuse me sir, could I have a moment of your time? I'm a TVBS journalist and I'd like to ask you some questions.

Michael:Sure, I guess so. What would you like to know?
Michael:

Vicky:First of all, are you a resident of Taichung City?
Vicky:

Michael:Yes, I am. Born and bred here.
Michael:

Vicky:You know he recently stated that Taichung city is "showing considerable improvement in cutting down crime". Would you agree or disagree with that?

Michael:I'd have to disagree. I don't see any changes at all. I think he's just blowing smoke. Politicians are birds of a feather! Some of them never do anything but talk.

Vicky:Well, it seems that it's more than just talk this time. The city government is planning to spend NT$80 million to install closed-circuit cameras all over the city. Do you have any thoughts about that?

Michael:Well, this is the first time I've heard of it. I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating. In other words, if it works then I'm for it.

Vicky:They're also planning to hire an additional 500 cops by the end of this year. Do you think having more police on the streets will increase public safety?

Michael:Yeah, I think it will. I'm glad to hear about that. You know, I always wanted to be a cop. They get to drive around with their lights flashing and all that.

Vicky:Well maybe this is your chance then. Anyhow, thanks for your time.

Michael:No problem. Thanks for the information. I'm going to call the city today to find out more.
"Dialogue 2"
1. Politicians are birds of a feather!(政治人物不都一樣!)

Birds of a feather flock together.

2. I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

(1) I'm an old-fashioned gal/guy.

(2) I'm a traditionalist.
