TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin officially launched yesterday the 2007 Taipei International 'Neo-ro Mien' -- beef noodle -- Festival to be held from September until November.

"Beef noodle soup is part of our culture," said Hau. "So we have invited chefs from six European and Asian countries to take part in this year's contest, in order to make sure beef noodle soup is known around the world."

The beef noodle contest takes place once a year in Taipei. It both attracts thousands of participants every year and gives publicity to beef noodle vendors, who usually enjoy an increase in the number of customers during the festival.

During the first stage of the competition, customers of various beef noodle shops will vote on the Internet or by phone for their favorite recipe of beef noodles. On Nov. 4, the 20 best 'chefs' will then compete for the gold medal during the final stage of the contest.

"Compared with foreign chefs who grill the beef for a few minutes, we stew it for sometimes 24 hours before it is served with noodles," said Liu Zheng-hsiung, chef at Old Don Beef noodle chain store and gold medalist during the 2006 Taipei Beef Noodle Contest. "Last year during the festival, we served more than 6,000 bowls of beef noodles per day for sampling."

According to Taipei City officials, 40 foreigners interested in this year's culinary event will be invited to join the competition's jury on Nov. 4. Registration will take place at the entrance for the final contest.
