A British biologist has determined female beetles often mate just to quench their thirst.
英國一位生物學家認定，雌甲蟲往往只為了解渴而交配。
University of Exeter researcher Martin Edvardsson found the males of some insect species -- including certain types of beetles, moths and crickets -- produce unusually large ejaculates, which in some cases can account for around 10 percent of their body weight.
艾賽斯特大學研究人員艾德瓦森發現，一些昆蟲品種，包括特定種類的甲蟲、蛾及蟋蟀，其雄蟲射精量特別多，有的甚至可達體重的10%左右。
The study shows dehydrated females often accept sexual invitations simply to obtain the water contained in the seminal fluid.
這項研究顯示，脫水的雌蟲往往只為了得到精液所含水分，而接受性愛邀請。
Edvardsson studied the bruchid beetle （Callosobruchus maculates）, giving some females unlimited access to water, while others were not. All females were free to mate with males and the study found thirsty females mated 40 percent more frequently than those with free access to water.
艾德瓦森研究了「四紋豆象」甲蟲（學名：Callosobruchus maculates），讓一些雌蟲無限制飲水，其它則限制飲水。這些雌蟲都能隨意與雄蟲交配，而該研究發現，相較於可以自由飲水的雌蟲，口渴的雌蟲交配機率高出40%。
Female bruchid beetles absorb water in the seminal fluid through their reproductive tracts and need to mate less frequently the more water they take from each mating.
四紋豆象雌蟲透過生殖道吸收精液中的水分，每次交配獲得的水分越多，交配的次數就不那麼頻繁。
