Jack and Diane are taking their lunch break together at a food court at B1 of their office building.

Diane: What's the matter with you today? I can tell that you've got something on your mind.
Diane:

Jack: Well, I have a meeting with my supervisor this afternoon and I'm a little nervous.
Jack:

Diane: Nervous about what?
Diane:

Jack: You know, I've been working here for five years now, and I've never gotten a raise.

Diane: So are you going to ask for one?
Diane:

Jack: Yeah, that's what I'm going to discuss with my supervisor later on today.
Jack:

Diane: I wouldn't be nervous if I were you. It has been long overdue!
Diane:

Jack: I just feel awkward about asking for it.
Jack:

Diane: Inflation has been going up over the past couple of years, so I think that it's quite reasonable to ask for a raise.

Jack: You're right! Prices have been going up! This fried rice is ten dollars more expensive than it was last year!

Diane: Let me know how everything goes. If you get a raise, then maybe I'll ask my supervisor for one, too!

Jack: Don't push your luck. You've only been working here for nine months!
Jack:

1. supervisor (n.) 管理人

例:I have a meeting with my supervisor this afternoon and I'm a little nervous.

My supervisor treats me very well, and I have learned a lot from him.

2. overdue (adj.) 過期的

例:I wouldn't be nervous if I were you. It has been long overdue!

You water bill has been overdue for two weeks. Go and pay it now!

3. awkward (adj.)

I just feel awkward about asking for it.

I feel awkward sitting with these people.

4. inflation (n.)

Inflation has been going up over the past couple of years.

A general rise of prices and wages is the necessary result of inflation.

5. push someone's luck

例:on't push your luck. You've only been working here for nine months!

He tried to push his luck in the card game and lost all his chips in the end.

sb can tell (that) + 子句 …

例:I can tell that you've got something on your mind.

I could tell that the man is an Australian from his unique accent.

tell that … from …"
