Jack and Jill are on a break from school. It's a Friday, and they are discussing the weekend.
Jack 和 Jill 正處於學校的下課時間。這一天是星期五，他們正討論週末的事。
Jill： Hey Jack! Did you hear about the typhoon?
喂，Jack！你知道颱風的消息嗎？
Jack： Of course! Everyone's talking about it! I think it's supposed to hit on Saturday or Sunday.
那當然！大家都在談論這件事。我想颱風侵襲的時間會在週六或週日。
Jill： Are you scared?
你會害怕嗎？
Jack： Me? Of course not! Our apartment is very safe. I just think it's a drag that it's going to come on a weekend. I mean, we don't even get to miss any school!

Jill： Wow! How can you be so nonchalant? I think typhoons can be very dangerous!

Jack： Come off it! It's fine as long as you stay indoors.

Jill： I suppose you're right. Still, I can't help but get worried that something bad could happen.

Jack： Well, if you're careful and you stay indoors, I promise everything will be ok. I bet we'll see each other Monday, and laugh about how scared you were!
嗯，只要你小心一點，且待在室內，我保證一切都會沒事的。我敢說我們可以在禮拜一碰面，然後可以笑你是多麼膽小！
"Dialogue 1" 相關實用句型：1.We don't even get to miss any school.
（我們連不用上課的福利都沒了。）
這裡的 school 並非指「學校」之意，而是「上課」或「學校的課程」，為一不可屬名詞，另外一個表示「課程」的 class 則為可數名詞。例如：
「早上的課八點半開始。」是 "School in the morning begins at 8：30."
2.I can't help but get worried that something bad could happen.
（我不得不擔心會有不好的事發生。）
"can't help but" 後面必須接原形動詞，表示「不得不...」，也可寫成 "can't help + 動名詞" 或 "can't but + 原形動詞"。例如：
"I cannot but fall in love with such a beautiful lady." 表示「我忍不住愛上這樣一位美女。」。 | |

Bob and Susan are at work. They are discussing their plans for the weekend.
Bob 與 Susan 正在上班。他們正在討論這末的計劃。
Bob： Hey Susan! Did you know the typhoon is supposed to hit this weekend? I hope you didn't have any big plans.
喂！Susan，你知道颱風可能在週末來襲嗎？我希望你沒有任何重要的計劃。
Susan： Actually, I was just planning on staying in anyway.
事實上，反正我正計劃窩在家裡。
Bob： Wow, you seem very unperturbed!
哇！你似乎相當鎮定。
Susan： Well, to be honest, I kind of like it when the typhoons hit. My kids lead very busy lives. Between my work and their hectic schedules, I feel like we don't get to spend much quality time together.
嗯，坦白說，我有點喜歡颱風來的時候。我的小孩們生活都很忙碌。為顧及我的工作以及他們緊湊的行程，我感覺我們並沒有好好相處。
Bob： But the typhoon forces everyone to stay in together?
但是颱風讓大家可以相處在一起嗎？
Susan： Exactly! We sit and talk and play board games. I feel like we really bond.

Bob： How do your children feel about all that time together?

Bob： Well good for you then! But if you like the time together so much, why don't you try to organize more family outings? I know I try to take my family to the park at least once a week.

Susan： I'd like to, but the kids would never agree to that! They've got their own lives, and they want to spend the weekend with their friends.

Bob： Come on! Don't give up that easily.
別這樣！別這麼輕易放棄。
Susan： Maybe you're right. Maybe I can demonstrate to everyone the value of being together as a family. But in the meantime, I think I'll just have to hope for more typhoons!

"Dialogue 2" 相關實用句型：3. Deep down I think they enjoy the time we spend as a family.
（我相信他們內心也是享受著一家人在一起的時間。）
句中的 "I think" 其實只是一個「插入語」，句首的 "Deep down"（在內心深處）是一個修飾動詞 enjoy 的副詞片語。
"we spend" 是一個省略關係代名詞 that/which 的形容詞子句，修飾 "the time"。4. Maybe I can demonstrate to everyone the value of being together as a family.
（或許我可以向大家示範一下家庭聚會的價值所在。）
這裡的 demonstrate（示範）是一個授與動詞的用法，其後的 to 為介系詞，everyone 為間接受詞、"the value of being together as a family" 是「直接受詞」。也可以寫成 "Maybe I can demonstrate the value of being together as a family to everyone."。 | | |
