Joyce: Oh, it's just an interesting book about different cultures. You are an American, right? You must agree with a lot of the book.

Brian: Let me see. Oh, yeah, I think the author read my mind. I totally agree with what she wrote. Take table manners for example. It is impolite to burp at the table. However, I have seen a lot of people just belch like that after eating. It seems like they don't care about other people's feelings, or everybody here has just gotten used to it？

Joyce: I know. It's quite rude, right? I once read an article about how Japanese feel about burping. As far as they're concerned, burping in front of others is far more disgusting than breaking wind in public.
我知道。這真的很不禮貌喔？我讀過一篇文章，是關於日本人對於打嗝的看法。就他們而言，在別人面前打嗝是遠比在公眾場合放屁來的噁心。
Brian: Well, it depends on how they look at it.

Joyce: Speaking of breaking wind, the article said that the Japanese invented some kind of cushion that can absorb farts. In that case, people around you will not find out what you're doing! I guess if it can make the smell vanish as well, it might be pretty useful to many people.
說到放屁，這文章還說日本人發明了某種能吸收屁的坐墊。這樣的話，週遭的人們就不會發現你在幹嘛！我想如果它也能消除味道的話，對很多人來說或許滿有用的。

※ 小叮嚀：
另一個字 fart 也是放屁的意思，不過比較不文雅。
5. absorb (v.) 吸收

（說到撇風，有篇文章說日本人發明了可以吸收放屁的坐墊。）

※ 小叮嚀：
absorb當「吸收」解釋時，它的受詞範圍很廣，可以是有物理特性的液體、氣體、光、聲音，也可以是無形的知識。
