Making a Difference
Jake: What's that you're looking at? Molly: It's a brochure about 1)charity work, and overseas volunteer programs. Jake: Are you thinking of doing something like that? Molly: Yes. Well, I mean I was. I'm not so sure anymore. It turns out there's a lot involved. Jake: Really? Do you have to apply and stuff? Molly: Yes, they need tons of personal information, a personal statement. But that's not really a problem. The big thing is that it costs a lot of money! Every volunteer has to pay their own way. We're talking over 60 grand! Jake: That is expensive. But on the other hand it's always expensive to travel. At least this way you'd be helping other people at the same time as you've seeing the world! Molly: That's what I was thinking. Then I thought: wouldn't my money do more good if I just donated it directly to a charity group? Jake: Did you hear about those six girls from Taiwan? Molly: Yes, they went to Malawi. Jake: I think what they did is probably more meaningful, and helpful, because the 2)orphans there got to feel cared about, by real people, not some big, faceless organization. Molly: Sure. It was better for those kids to meet some real people who care, rather than just getting a big bag of rice or something. Jake: Exactly! I think the personal touch makes a huge difference. |
