The South African government is to stump up thousands of dollars in compensation after a steaming and bubbling toilet burnt the buttocks and private parts of a paraplegic prisoner.

The 36-year-old, who was being held at Pretoria central prison at the time of the incident in 2004, is to receive around 5,000 dollars as part of an out-of-court settlement, The Star newspaper reported.

In his initial lawsuit filed against the public works and correctional services department, Augustino Banze said that "steam and hot water arose from the toilet, causing me severe burns" during refurbishment work.

He had had to throw himself off the toilet and shouted for help. A prison nurse gave him ointment for his burns, before he was transferred to hospital.

Banze had argued that the authorities should have ensured the plumbing was safe during the refurbishment.
