Jason, the CEO of the Taiwan Gadget Company, has just walked out of a board meeting with a distressed look on his face. Lucy, his personal assistant, asks him if he needs anything to be done before the end of the day.

Lucy: Is there anything that you would like me to do before the end of the day?
Lucy:

Jason: Yes, please get me some aspirin. I have a splitting headache!
Jason:

Lucy: I guess the meeting didn't go so well.
Lucy:

Jason: We discussed the company's performance so far this year and sales in the third quarter are forty percent lower than they were this time last year.

Lucy: I see why you need an aspirin. You must have gotten an ear full!

Jason: I don't really think that anyone is to blame. I believe that the world economy is slowing down, and that people are spending less.

Lucy: That could account for the big drop in sales from last year.
Lucy:

Jason: The board of directors didn't think so. They think that our sales team isn't aggressive enough, and they want me to put more pressure on the sales director.

Lucy: I hope that things will turn around next year.
Lucy:

Jason: They'll have to, or I'm afraid that some employees will have to be let go.
Jason:

Lucy: I'll go and get you aspirin now.
Lucy:

Jason: Thanks! And please get me a cup of coffee.
Jason:

1.distressed (adj.)

Jason has just walked out of a board meeting with a distressed look on his face.

(Jason

Don't be so distressed. Things will turn around soon.

2. splitting (adj.)

例:Please get me some aspirin. I have a splitting headache!

I had a splitting stomach ache and had to call in sick.

3. blame (v.)

例:I don't really think that anyone is to blame.

I blamed myself for the mistake.

4. account for 對 … 有責任

例:That could account for the big drop in sales from last year.

No one thought that he should account for the accident.

5. aggressive (adj.)

They think that our sales team isn't aggressive enough.

Do you think yourself aggressive enough for the position, young man?
