Colonial architecture was necessarily simple and straightforward— like a folk song—since the early colonists were more concerned with survival than with creating architectural masterpieces. Nevertheless, their buildings appeared to resonate with the lilting melodies of England, Sweden, Holland, France, Germany and Spain.
