Polly：我就是。 Ted: This is Ted from the Taiwan Formosa Trading Company. Ted：我是 Taiwan Formosa Trading Company 的 Ted。 Polly: Hi. I guess you were wondering if I received the contract. Polly：嗨。我猜你在想我是不是收到合約了。 Ted: Right! I sent it to you by courier at the beginning of the week. Ted：是的！我這星期初就用快遞過去給你了。 Polly: My boss doesn't read English very well, so he is having it translated. Also, I think that there are a few things in the contract that he might want to have amended. Polly：我老闆不太讀得懂英文，所以他正在請人翻譯。還有，我想合約裡面有些東西他可能想要做些修改。 Ted: He has the right to cross out or amend any portion of the contract before signing it. Polly：再見。 重要字詞講解 1. amend(n.) 修改；訂正 例：There are a few things in the contract that he might want to have amended. （合約裡面有些東西他可能想要做些修改。） 例：The copyright law has been amended for several times. （著作權法已被修正了幾次。） 2. cross out 刪除 例：He has the right to cross out or amend any portion of the contract before signing it. （他有權利在簽合約前刪除或修改合約裡的任何內容。） 例：I couldn't believe that my name was crossed out from the guest list. （我不敢相信我的名字居然從賓客名單上被刪除。） ※ 小叮嚀： "cross" 為「十字、交叉」之意。"cross out" 是指將文件中某部份打叉，進而有「刪除」之意。 3. portion(n.)部份 例：He decided to cross out the major portion of the article. （他決定要刪除文章內大部份的內容。） 例：She devoted a great portion of the life to her family. （她將人生大部份的時間貢獻給了她的家庭。） ※ 小叮嚀： "portion" 可另指「一人份的食物」。 4. relay(v.)轉達 例：I'll relay the message to him. （我會把這個訊息轉達給他的。） 例：No one dare relay the bad news to the bride. （沒有人敢把這壞消息轉達給新娘知道。） ※ 小叮嚀： "relay" 另有「轉播」之意。例：The program was relayed only in Asia.（這節目只有在亞洲地區轉播。） 5. simplified(v.)簡化的；變成簡易的 例：He can amend it in either traditional or simplified Chinese. （他可以用繁體或簡體中文修改。） 例：The simplified versions of story books might exclude some interesting details. （故事書的簡化版本可能會拿掉一些有趣的細節。） 小試身手 1.
